Imperfect Resource Substitution and Optimal Transition to Clean Technologies
نویسنده
چکیده
Non-renewable and renewable resources are imperfect substitutes due to technical and geographical constraints. What is the role of imperfect substitution on the optimal transition path to the clean technologies? We address this question by characterizing the optimal growth path and resource use of an economy. We show that the economy initially starts with using the non-renewable and renewable resources simultaneously and gradually increases the share of renewable. The outcome can be either (i) the economy switches to a backstop at a certain date or (ii) the initial regime lasts forever. The results show that the economy converges to a steady state even if the backstop is too costly and a green, zerocarbon economy is the optimal final state in any case. We also present some simulation results to illustrate the shapes of the optimal paths. This analysis allows us to discuss the policy implications and question the existence of the Green Paradox.

We develop a microeconomic model of endogenous growth where clean and dirty technologies compete in production and innovation– in the sense that research can be directed to either clean or dirty technologies. If dirty technologies are more advanced to start with, the potential transition to clean technology can be diffi cult both because clean research must climb several rungs to catch up with ...
متن کاملOptimal Energy Transition and Taxation of Non - Renewable Resources
This paper investigates the optimal taxation path of a non-renewable resource in the presence of an imperfect substitute renewable resource. We present an optimal growth model and characterize the social optimum and the decentralized equilibrium. We show that the economy gradually reduces the share of non-renewable resource and converges to a steady state in which it uses only the renewable res...

This study aims at determining the optimal environmental tax policy in the context of a dynamic model. For this purpose, clean technology diffusion was added to the AK growth model and the theoretical model has been generalized to the open economy. The main feature of the economy is creating pollution in the process of economic growth and its negative impact on social welfare. The diffusion...

In this paper, a dynamic optimization approach for optimal choice of energy carriers in thermal power plants is proposed that analyzes the substitution of energy carriers in short-term planning of a power plant. The model is based on the linear programming method with the objective of minimizing costs under constraints of resource availability, energy balances, environmental regulations and elec...
